Grilled Avocado – Hey Grill, Hey

If you love avocado, then this Easy Grilled Avocado recipe is a must-try. With just 5 easy ingredients and a hot grill, you can give an already-popular side some BBQ flavor and a touch of grill love.

Easy Grilled Avocado

If you’ve never had avocado on the grill, you’re in for a treat today! Just 5 minutes over high heat transforms ordinary avocados into something that’s got smoky charring on the outside and warm, creaminess inside. It’s still avocado, just better. The recipe and method is about as simple as it gets. Halve them, brush them with oil, hit them with a little of my signature Sweet Rub, and grill them cut-side down for just a few minutes. Eat them straight from the serving platter, or use them as the base for something incredible. Either way, you’ll be hooked.

Ingredients for this Recipe

The list of ingredients may be short (and that’s a good thing), but the flavor payoff is huge! Here’s what you’ll want on hand so you can get started:

  • Avocados: The recipe calls for 2 avocados, but you can make as many as you like. Just remember to adjust the rest of the ingredients as well. You want the avocados sliced in half lengthwise with the pits removed. Look for avocados that are ripe but still firm. You want a little give, but not too mushy so the avocados hold up on the grill.
  • Avocado oil: I already use avocado oil all the time when grilling. It’s got a high smoke point and neutral flavor, so it’s awesome for grilling and smoking. It’s a natural fit here (for obvious reasons).
  • Hey Grill Hey Sweet Rub: The brown sugar base helps the avocados caramelize against the hot grill grates, and brings out a subtle sweetness. If you don’t have any Sweet Rub on hand, you can pick some up in the Hey Grill Hey Store, or make your own following this recipe.
  • Fresh lime juice: Squeeze it on right after your avocados come off the grill. This brightens everything up and helps keeps the avocado from browning too quickly.
  • Kosher salt: A finishing sprinkle brings out the creaminess of the avocados and balances the sweetness from the rub.

How to Make Grilled Avocado

Grilling your avocados is as simple as slice, season, sizzle, and serve. Here’s how to make this awesome recipe in just 4 easy steps:

  1. Preheat the grill. Set your favorite grill up for high heat (between 400 and 450 degrees F). I love grilling my avocado over charcoal because it adds some lovely charring. You can still make this recipe using a gas grill or even your smoker.
  2. Prepare the avocados. First, use a sharp knife to slice each avocado in half lengthwise, then remove the pits. Use a basting brush to coat the cut halves of each avocado with avocado oil, then season with the Sweet Rub. The oil not only helps the seasoning adhere, but also keeps the avocados from sticking to the grill grates.
  3. Grill the avocados. Place the avocado halves cut-side down directly on the grill grates, close the lid, and allow them to cook for 3 to 5 minutes. You want to give the avocados enough time to develop some nice char marks and to soften up, but not fall apart. Once you can lift your avocados easily using a spatula, they’re good to go.
  4. Finish, serve, and enjoy. Transfer the grilled avocado halves to a cutting board or serving platter before serving. I love to squeeze a little fresh lime juice on my avocados before sprinkling them with some Kosher salt, but you add whatever you like. After that, you can enjoy your avocados however you enjoy them most. Enjoy your avocados as-is, make some fresh guacamole with a grilled twist, or use them for tacos, chilis, and more!

Ways to Use

Eat them straight off the platter and they’re plenty satisfying on their own. But grilled avocados are also one of the most versatile things you can pull off a grill, and they make everything they touch better.

  • Tacos: Slice the grilled halves thin and use them in your favorite tacos. Carne asada, chicken, fish, shrimp: they’re all that much better with grilled avocado.
  • Chili: Slice or dice into a bowl of your favorite ground beef, turkey, or even venison chili for a creamy topper.
  • Guacamole: Scoop the grilled flesh and mash it up. The char adds a smoky depth to homemade guac that you can’t get any other way.
  • Even more: These avocados give an amazing grilled touch to everything from burgers to salads. Think of your favorite way to enjoy avocados. Yes, they’re great that way as well.

Susie’s Grilled Avocado Pro Tips

  • Firm over ripe. A ripe avocado makes for great guacamole, but turns to mush pretty quickly on a hot grill. You want to choose avocados that are still ripe, but firm enough to hold up to grilling without falling apart.
  • Oil the grates. Even with the oil on the avocados, well-oiled grates make a big difference. Lightly brush the grates with a little oil before grilling. This makes removing your avocados easier, and makes for even better grill marks.
  • Season right before. The salt in the Sweet Rub (and pretty much any seasoning) will draw out moisture if applied too early, which can make it tough to get a good sear. Wait to apply the seasoning until when you’re ready to grill.
