Whether you’re just getting started or you’ve been grilling for years, having the right tools in your backyard setup makes everything easier, safer, and a whole lot more fun. These are the essential grill tools I come back to every single grilling season, and what you’ll want to be ready for summer 2026.
Essential Grill Tools for 2026
One thing I get asked about all the time s what tools are actually worth having for backyard grilling. There’s a lot of gear out there, and it’s easy to end up with a drawer full of stuff you never use. I narrowed it down to the essentials I genuinely use and love. These are the ones I’d recommend to anyone, whether you’re just getting started or you’ve been at it for years.
1. Good Recipe
The most important tool when it comes to grilling (and any kind of cooking, really) is a good recipe. My goal has always been to create clear, easy-to-follow recipes to help you become a Backyard BBQ Hero. Once you get the basics down, you can experiment with flavors and methods to create something all your own. You can find all my recipes right here on the https://homefrontking.com/, as well as in the Hey Grill Hey App.
If you’re looking for something you can keep grill-side without worrying about wifi, my cookbook, Backyard BBQ Hero, has almost 100 of my most popular recipes, plus guides for grills, wood types, temperatures, and a whole lot more. It’s basically a cheat code for BBQ Hero status!
2. Instant-Read Thermometer
When it comes to BBQ, the single most important factor to nailing tender, juicy meat with perfectly-rendered fat is internal temperature. That’s why I always recommend cooking with an instant-read meat thermometer. Whether you’re slow-smoking a brisket or searing a ribeye, reading an accurate internal temperature is key. This tool is not only essential for the backyard, but will come in handy in the kitchen as well.
I personally love and recommend the Thermapen ONE from ThermoWorks. If you’ve looked through any of my recipe photos or watched any of the videos on my YouTube channel, you’ve already seen this thing in action. It might seem a little pricy, but with an in-seconds reading, backlit display, and even magnets for easy storage, it’s worth the investment. Plus, it costs less than one ruined prime rib roast.
3. Versatile Gloves
Okay, this might seem like a bit of a shameless plug (and it is), but that’s because these Pitmaster Gloves really do it all. I designed them myself because I couldn’t find gloves that actually did everything I needed at the grill: heat protection, dexterity, and easy cleanup. These gloves are heat resistant up to 500 degrees F, waterproof, food safe, and machine washable.
I use mine for everything from pulling pork to slathering on sauce to handling hot briskets. And when I’m done, they go straight in the dishwasher. They come in sizes Small through XXL, so there’s a pair that actually fits your hands, not just one-size-fits-most.
4. Sharp Knife
It’s time to ditch those dull, cheap knives and invest in a solid knife that you can use for years to come. I’ve tried a lot of knives during my BBQ journey, and I keep going back to the Dalstrong Gladiator chef’s knife. While it’s a bit on the pricey side, it is worth every penny. The 8-inch blade is a great fit for all things BBQ. Whether you’re chopping veggies, trimming fat, slicing brisket, or cutting fruit, this knife will be used over and over again.
Pro Tip: The most important thing with any knife is keeping it sharp. A dull knife requires more pressure, which means less control and a lot more frustration.
5. Tongs
You really don’t need all sorts of utensils hanging by your BBQ, but you absolutely need a good, sturdy set of locking tongs. A long set of tongs helps keep your hands out of the burn zone. You should also look for tongs that open wide enough for your needs. There’s nothing worse than finding out your tongs can’t grab your food when it’s time to pull from the grill. Trust me, the right pair of tongs will save you a lot of headache.
6. Grill Basket
If you’ve ever lost shrimp through the grates or watched a pile of sliced peppers fall into the coals, you already understand the importance of a grill basket. This simple tool keeps smaller items corralled on the grill so you can toss, shake, and cook without worry. It’s perfect for vegetables, seafood, diced meats, and anything else that would otherwise slip through the grates. A good grill basket is one of those things you’ll reach for constantly.
7. Charcoal Chimney
If you’re cooking on a charcoal grill, invest in a charcoal chimney. Using a chimney lights charcoal quickly and evenly, and you don’t need lighter fluid. It gives you great control over where to focus your heat, which is a must when cooking with two-zone grilling on a charcoal grill. If you’re still using lighter fluid, I want to encourage you try this instead. Once you switch to a chimney, you’ll taste the difference.
8. Spatula
Right up there with a set of tongs, you want a good spatula. If you plan of making smash burgers at your next cookout, you need an awesome spatula to do all the flipping without fear of losing those patties through the grates. A spatula is all great when working with delicate things like fish, or anything that needs a quick flip. Tongs can do a lot, but they can’t flip a burger. Invest in a good spatula and you’ll never regret it.
9. Skewers
Kebabs, souvlaki, grilled pineapple, stuffed jalapeños: skewers open up a whole world of grilling and make for a fun presentation. Metal and bamboo both work amazing. If you prefer bamboo, soak them in water for 30 minutes before grilling to prevent burning. Thread your meat and veggies in alternating order for even cooking, and don’t forget to leave a little space between each piece for circulation. If you make it a party, then you want skewers.
10. Grater
A solid grater might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of grilling, but it’s a sneaky essential. A grater makes quick work of garlic and all those hard cheeses, but it also makes zesting lemons and limes a breeze. I recommend having a couple different sizes of graters on hand, or an adjustable grater. You’ll find out quick that garlic and a block of cheese don’t shred the same, so make sure you have the tools for your needs.
